World crude oil prices are always on the increase, making the cost of owning a vehicle rise as most operational costs go towards meeting fuel cost. The continued rise in fuel prices has led to the introduction of various fuel saving devices, of which gasoline saving device is one of them.

The manufacturers of Gasoline saving device advertise the following as some of the features of their products:

Gasoline economy. Most of the devices are touted to improve on a vehicles gasoline economy by as much as 20%. While most vehicle owners have rushed to buy such products and get them fixed in their vehicles, the US Environmental Protection Agency warns that such devices can have a negative effect on a vehicles system. From over 100 gasoline saving devices that the agency has tested, it did not get any device that meaningfully improved a vehicles fuel economy. Although some of the tested devices showed some positive result tests, the improvement recorded was very minimal. Most of the devices tested were actually discovered to have some effects that may cause damage to a vehicles engine, resulting in unsafe exhaust emissions.

A vehicles increased performance. The manufacturers of fuel saving devices claim that their devices have the capacity to increase a vehicle performance on available gasoline. This advertisement is particularly intended for truck owners who regularly transport cargo to various destinations. While such a claim may or may not be true, it is a fact that a vehicles performance can increase as a result of several factors even without the use of such a device. However, this is not to say that the devices do not work, some have been tested and found to have some impact.

Low maintenance costs. Device manufacturers claim that the use of fuel saving devices eliminates the need for routine maintenance. This is a claim that can be either be supported or disputed, but the fact remains that for a vehicle to continue operating at its optimum, it requires regular maintenance and servicing.

There are several gasoline saving device for cars in the market manufactured by different companies. These devices act differently and not all may be suitable for use in any vehicle. There are those that mainly work on a vehicles ignition system, those that work along a vehicles fuel line (these can be additives or mountings), those that work in a vehicles combustion chamber and those that work along a vehicles air system. Those that work in a vehicles engine may require some engine modifications to be undertaken before they can operate.

While the need for fuel saving devices is real and a live, vehicle owners need to take necessary steps to ensure that the devices they fit in their vehicles will not only perform their functions, but will not produce other undesirable effects. The USs EPA has tested several products and issued Data tests to companies manufacturing them and buyers can request for such information to be sure of the devices they buy.

The Federal Trade Commission also warns consumers to be weary of advertisements that claim unproven facts and instead advices on using practical steps one can employ to increase fuel mileage and avoid products whose authenticity cannot be verified.
