subject: Some Usage Infromation About Memory Cards [print this page]

A solid-state electronic flash memory data storage device capable of storing digital contents is called a memory card or a flash memory card. Memory cards are mainly used with digital cameras, handheld and Mobile computers, mobile phones, music players, digital cinematography cameras, video game consoles, and PDAs. Also non-solid state memory cards which do not use flash memory are available. These memory cards offer high re-record-ability, power-free storage and small form factor. These cards incorporate wear levelling algorithms in their design and there are different types of memory cards and the purpose for their use. Common places include in digital cameras, game consoles and cell phones. Other places include industrial applications also.

In 1990 s the first commercial memory card formats that are type 1 cards came out in the market which are called PC card but are now only mainly used in industrial applications and as a connection standard for modems. Other than this a number of memory card formats smaller than PC Card came out in 1990s like Miniature card, compact flash and smart media. . Tiny embedded memory cards were used in cell phones. Then the trend came of smaller cards which left behind the compact cards which looked big because the people desired for ultra-small cards for cell-phones, PDAs, and compact digital cameras. In the year 2001 Smart Media and Compact Flash became very successful and Smart Media captured 50% of the digital camera market and compact flash on the professional digital cameras. However by the year 2005 SD/MMC had nearly taken over Smart Media's spot. But Memory Stick variants and Compact Flash gave stiff competition. The memory card market is highly fragmented in cell-phones and PDAs.
