subject: Tips To Make Your Computer Perform Better And Serve You Longer [print this page]

Many people make simple mistakes while operating computers which can affect the performance of their pc. So you should try to equip yourself with basic knowledge of operating and maintaining your pc for optimum performance.

Below are some tips which can help you greatly:

1. Don't switch off your computer directly. You should wait for the shutdown message from Windows before you turn power off from your machine. Otherwise it can cause some problems with your Windows operating system. In some cases, repeatedly turning off your machine directly may cause some damage to the hard drive too.

In some cases, when the computer gets stuck and is not responding then you can force a shutdown by pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL keys. This will launch the task manager where you have the option of shutting down or restarting the computer.

If the task manager does not appear even after pressing the above keys, then you should try to safely switch off the computer and restart it again.

2. If you live in a country where there are frequent power failures, then try to get a UPS for your computer. UPS stands for uninterrupted power supply. Connect your computer to UPS instead of directly to a power socket.

There are many kinds of UPS and many of them will provide backup for 10-20 minutes in case of power failure. During this time you can save your work and shut down the system safely.

3. If you use the internet a lot, then it is recommended to invest in a good anti-virus and anti-spyware program to protect from unwanted adware, spyware and virus from infecting your computer.

Not only should you install a good antivirus software, but also should take steps to keep it updated. Most of these softwares have an auto-update feature which means that when you are connected to the internet, the antivirus program will automatically search for any new updates and if available, it will download and update itself without any manual intervention from your side.

4. It is also recommended to keep your computer clean and free from dust. So clean your computer regularly specially if the room in which computer is located gets a lot of dust.

Dust can clog the CPU fan and cause overheating of the PC. So you need to periodically clean the outside and inside of your computer.

If you diligently follow the above tips, your computer will hopefully perform better and keep giving your service for a long time to come.
