subject: Aluminium Bars And Aluminium Flat Bars - For Extensive Industrial Use [print this page]

Aluminium is the most commonly, as well as the most abundantly, found metal on the Earth. Amongst the most remarkable properties of aluminium metal are:

> Its ability to be corrosion free and

> Its low density.

Components made from aluminium and its alloys are used in various industries and form a big chunk of the aerospace industry as well.

An aluminium bar, as per the definition of Aluminium Association, is a product that is solid and long in length. The shape of the cross section may be:

1. Rectangular or Square (excluding flattened wire and plate) with sharp corners or rounded edges, or

2. Regular octagon or hexagon.

Aluminium bars come in two shapes round and flat. They are mainly used in the following areas extensively:

Sports equipment

Food

Engine

Chemistry

Ships

Mould furniture

Containers

Vessels

The uses are mainly in industry. Apart from these above mentioned industries, aluminium, due to its light weight, finds its way into the furniture industry as well. Choosing aluminium bars is ideal as aluminium is one of the strongest, not to mention durable, alloy. The biggest advantage would be that it is completely rust proof. It is ideal to be used in the long run even if used on a day to day basis.

Production of an aluminium rod, or bar, can be done by several processes. One of these methods is like rolling a sheet. A square, long in length ingot is heated, then reduced in terms of cross-section, which is done by coiling it after it has been passed through a series of rolls. Then these coils are again heated to soften them and then the desired shape is achieved through machines.

Electrical transmission wires are by and large the most extensive uses of aluminium rods/bar products. Actually in this market, no other metal can compete with aluminium. It is simply the most economic way of supplying electrical power.

Aluminium rods and bars also find their way into:

Nails

Rivets

Bolts

Screws

Parts of various kinds of machinery as well as equipment.

Household uses include - acting as a lightning rod high up on the roof. Aluminium thus protects our homes.

Aluminium tubes are also used as carriers of liquids in food processing equipment, heat exchangers, water treatment plants, amongst other industrial applications as well.

Aluminium bars, rods, and wire products are often grouped together or referred in a single category of products. Aluminium wire is made from bar or rod, and is less in diameter even less than three-eighths of an inch, while bars and rods are usually thicker.

Even though, as mentioned above, electrical transmission lines constitute the largest end-users of bar/rod/wire products, they also feature significantly in making of parts of machinery mainly due to their durability and rustproof property.

Aluminium flat bars are also used for gate latches, support braces, ladder hangers and safety guards. The uses of aluminium are many, due to its many excellent properties.
