subject: The History About Ice Hockey [print this page]

I don't know if you had the same feeling with me, but I tend to connect ice hockey with Canada. Nobody knows for certain who invented ice hockey, but the sport does have an official history. Ice hockey, basically known as the "ball and stick" game, is originated from Canada. With a history of over a hundred years, it gradually spread to our American and European countries and grew more and more popular. The ice hockey players all have special equipments, with a stick in their hand and try to hit the ball with the stick on the ice. It is one of the ball games with highest speed in the world. And nowadays, ice hockey has already jointed the Winter Olympics.

Speaking of the history of ice hockey, there are various explanations. One of them is that it was played since ancient times in places diverse as Rome, Scotland, Egypt and South America. Very rough and crude forms of these games have been taking place for thousands of years throughout Europe, Egypt and South America that have formed hockey history. Another explanation that enjoys equal recognition is that this game, as I said in the first paragraph, first started in Canada in the middle nineteenth century. In Creighton, Canada, an ice game was quite popular at that time; the players had ice knives tired up on their feet and with hockey stick in their hands, hit the ball that made of wood on the freezing lake. There were no limitations on the amount of the player, or on the places. This is believed as the predecessor of the modern ice hockey. In 1875, the first game of ice hockey with Creighton's rules was played in Montreal, Canada. In the year 1879, the student, W. F. Robertson together with a professor named R. F. Smith from McGill University in Montreal made the first official set of rules for hockey, formulating that the amount of the player is nine for each game. In 1885, the first spare time ice hockey club was founded, all the ice hockey lovers can be in it. In 1893, for the first time, the ice hockey player in Canada went to the US to perform. It was first played at the Olympic Games in 1924 and only allowed male teams. Canada won the champions for many times from 1924-1953.

Ice hockey is a very exciting game, but also it could be extremely dangerous too. Anyway, this is a game that worth the world's attention.
