There are many well-preserved Arches in Florence. One of these, is the "Arco dei Peruzzi". (Other famous and beautiful arches are "Arco di San Pierino" and "Arco di Trionfo"). The Arco dei Peruzzi in Florence is situated between Via de 'Benci and Piazza Peruzzi. The square was originally called "court of Peruzzi," because all the buildings that faced it belonged to this wealthy family of bankers (the tower of the Peruzzi, the building and a lodge destroyed in 1772). The arch, in particular, was both a kind of monumental entrance, and an air bridge connecting two buildings. According to Giorgio Vasari, Paolo Uccellohad painted the inside of this arc with triangles placed in perspective and four animals in the corners, each symbolizing a natural element: a mole on the ground, a fish to water, a salamander in the fire and a chameleon in the air, given his ability to take on any color. But Paolo Uccello had never seen such an animal and he resolved to paint a camel with his mouth open that fills the lungs 'air'. Of these paintings no longer exists trace today. The arch is slightly lower with a crest on the keystone. The abutments are absorbed in the walls of two buildings on either side.
