Spices and Kerala are synonym for each otherSpices and Kerala are synonym for each other. From time immemorial Kerala is known for its fabulous spices. Thanks to these aromatic spices, Kerala is famed as "spice land" and also acquired the position of spice capital of the world.

What are Spices:

Spices can be defined as aromatic substances of vegetable origin. These are used as flavoring agent or as a preservative. Spices are also used as medicines. For instance, turmeric is used as an anti-oxidant and curry leaves are used to prevent diabetes.

History of Spice Trade in Kerala:

It is believed that the spice trade dates back to three thousand years in the state. Traders from countries nearby to Mediterranean sea visits Kerala to carry back spices from here. British East India company, Portuguese, French, and Dutch fought with each other for the possession of spice trade route to Kerala. The natives of these countries to flavour their cuisines and also to preserves their meat during the long European cold wars.

Spices Produced In Kerala:

Spices like pepper, cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, garlic, cloves, vanilla, oregano, rosemary, thyme, basil, mint, bay leaf, nutmeg and sage etc. Pepper being the king of all these spices. Every year Kerala tops in pepper (96 per cent), Cardamom (53 per cent), Ginger (25 per cent) production in the country.

Spices Farming Places In Kerala:

Hilly towns like Munnar, Idukki, Spring Valley located on the way to Thekkady from Kottayam etc.

Spice Export From Kerala:

All these aforementioned spices are exported from Kerala to various countries like USA, Malaysia, UK, China, Germany, Japan, UAE, Sri Lanka, and Singapore etc. During the last one decade, spices exports have been consistently moving.

And a spice tour to Kerala is the best way to explore the vast plantations of the state while immersing oneself in the aroma of spice.
