subject: Aerobic Exercise Benefits [print this page]

Aerobic exercise is any constant brisk physical activity that requires the heart and lungs to work harder to meet the body's increased oxygen demand. Aerobic exercise promotes the circulation of oxygen through the blood. It also makes your heart stronger and more efficient. At least 30 minutes of daily aerobic activity; such as walking, bicycling, jogging, stair climbing or swimming can help you live a longer and healthier life.

Regardless of age, weight or athletic ability there is no doubt that aerobic exercise is good for you. It is also very beneficial for weight management. It doesn't matter whether you are trying to lose weight or maintain it, you should understand the importance of physical activity and strive to include it in your daily lifestyle.

Encourage your family or friends to join you in your activity. When parents are active, their children are more likely to be active and stay active for the rest of their lives. Challenge yourself. Set short-term as well as long-term goals and celebrate every success, no matter how small. Whether your goal is to control your weight or just to be healthier, being physically active is a step in the right direction. As your body adapts to regular aerobic exercise, you'll get stronger, feel better and have more energy too.

Aerobic activity is safe for most people, but sometimes it's important to get your doctor's approval first; especially if you have any health conditions. When you're ready to begin exercising; start slowly. You might walk five minutes in the morning and five minutes in the evening. The next day, add a few minutes to each walking session then pick up the pace a bit. Soon, you could be walking briskly for at least 30 minutes a day and reaping all the benefits of regular aerobic activity.

Aerobic exercise combined with a well balanced diet is the best advice anyone can give you for a long healthy life.
