It shouldn't be a surprise, then, that he is already making predictions through his self-proclaimed "crystal ball" for the 2010-11 football season that have his Jets standing tall as the 2011 Super Bowl champions.
Ryan's most recent outburst occurred during training camp when ESPN's Adam Schefter asked the coach to sign the Jets' logo on the back of the ESPN tour bus. Instead of signing the team's logo, however, Ryan wrote "Soon to be Champs," backing it up by telling ESPN, "That's what I'm saying. That's our mentality. That's our goal and I've got confidence to put it up there. I believe we'll do it, so why wouldn't we say it, why wouldn't we go for it?"
If any coach should be as confident about his team going into a regular season, it's Rex Ryan. The New York Jets have had a very busy offseason, acquiring several high-profile players including wideout Santonio Holmes, linebacker Jason Taylor, running back LaDainian Tomlinson, cornerback Antonio Cromartie and drafting a solid cornerback in Kyle Wilson.
Already going into training camp, Gang Green looks like the dominant powerhouse in the AFC East. The Jets certainly have had a bigger offseason than divisional rivals the Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots and Buffalo Bills, though a big obstacle at this point will be to make sure all these new flashy players can work together under the same team.
If anything should hinder the Jets' shot at Super Bowl contention this year, perhaps it's the current holdout of cornerback Darrelle Revis. The beast of a player had an incredible year in 2009 and is demanding more than his $1 million contract this season, holding out of the team's training camp until he works out a new deal with the Jets.
Though Revis is a hot topic in Cortland right now, 'Broadway' Joe Namath visited the Jets at training camp and proclaimed his high hopes for the team and its star cornerback. Claiming to be confident that Revis would come back this season, Namath also called Rex Ryan's championship declarations completely "justified," telling ESPN, "To me, we have the most legitimate contender we've had... We have a team we're expecting a lot out of this year."
With Joe Namath hopping aboard the Rex Ryan train about to blow through the AFC East this season, a regular season of football has never been more eagerly anticipated. Fans of Gang Green are jumping all over the chance to get New York Jets tickets to watch Mark Sanchez and his star-studded herd of Jets take on their fiercest competitors this season, and the action kicks off with a Week 1 matchup at home against the Baltimore Ravens on Sept. 13.
