Our home and kitchen is the center of a large, untidy remodeling project. We made a decision to update our kitchen with new cupboards, counters, and floors. While we were at it, we also wish to revise the traffic flow, meaning moving some of the plumbing and electric.
My man, Randy, decided we might do the transforming ourselves instead of contract somebody to do it. He once built a whole house and it's still standing after twenty years, so I trust he'll manage the workload provided I control.
The remodeling of our kitchen has been underway for 9 weeks and we have things torn out and scattered everywhere. I've given up on keeping the house clean. Keeping up with parts of the house and where we put the groceries this week is hard enough. We decided to take things in small segments so Randy didn't have to take time off from his day job to work at home. He does what he can at night and on weekends. It's slow but steady progress.
Our kitchen has partially-painted walls-some with the old paint color, some with the new paint color and some with new drywall that has to be mudded or sanded. There's more paint on the old vinyl floor than there's on the walls in some places. Sanding dust decorates each level surface in the house and every part of furniture has smiley faces and butterflies etched by tiny fingers and signed by the grandkids. What a piece of art!
The remaining old base cabinets with their tired, worn-out faces are embarrassed by beautiful new wall cabinets we've installed. Peeling, cracked countertops sit precariously atop old base cabinets that had to be pulled away from the wall to allow access for tearing out the old bulkhead and hanging the new upper cabinets Dishes are stacked all over the dining room. We even have small appliances in the living room. The rest of the newly-assembled IKEA cabinets are in the spare bedroom waiting their turn in the line up.
Randy turned me loose to pick the new worktop, so I went to the granite yard and bought a big, expensive piece of rock. With the template man coming the week after next, we need to get the terrazzo tile floor laid next weekend so we are able to install the base cupboards for a correct measurement. That implies we must move the sink and its plumbing to the opposite side of the dishwasher by Tues. No problem. Who wishes sleep?
