Here are five pitchers who have started to come on and who might be able to carry your team in the final portion of the season (note: stats are as of Aug. 3).
Gavin Floyd, Chicago White Sox:
Even though Floyd still has a winning percentage below .500, he hasn't let up more than two earned runs in a start since June 2 against Texas. After a rough start to the season, Floyd has won five of his last six decisions and has been steadily plunging his ERA since the middle of May. In his last 11 starts, Floyd has posted a ridiculous 1.06 ERA as well as a very good walk to strikeout ratio, making him one of the most valuable starting pitchers over that time frame. The White Sox haven't given Floyd too much run support, but they are still in the playoff hunt and will get him his wins if he continues to put up quality starts.
Brett Myers, Houston Astros:
Myers is simply on an amazing run right now for the Astros. Though Myers isn't the type of pitcher who sells many MLB tickets, he's been a breath of fresh air for the Astros in one of the most difficult seasons in franchise history. Myers has won each of his last three starts and remarkably hasn't gone less than six innings all season long without missing a single start. His worst performances over his last six starts were two no-decisions in which he went six innings and let up two earned runs to division leaders St. Louis and San Diego.
Chad Billingsley, Los Angeles Dodgers:
Billingsley has been all over the map this season but seems like he's on the cusp of finally bringing it all together. After his July 31 start, Billingsley had 21.2 consecutive scoreless innings and has put together a nice string of wins in the process. Though Billingsley is always good for a shell-job every now and then, like when he let up seven runs to the Cardinals on July 16, Billingsley has really buckled down after the All-Star break. As the Dodgers desperately try to get back in the divisional race, Billingsley is the man who needs to get it done.
Adam Wainwright, St. Louis Cardinals:
At 15-6, Wainwright has been a stud for most of the season but has really pitched well in the second half. Wainwright has won seven of his last nine starts and continues to push down his ERA; after his last start, Wainwright was second in the N.L. in ERA (2.19) and WHIP (1.02).
Roy Halladay, Philadelphia Phillies:
Not surprisingly, Halladay is putting together quite a season in Philadelphia. Though he has been somewhat overshadowed by dominant pitchers like Josh Johnson and Ubaldo Jimenez, Halladay has really picked it up and could even win the Cy Young at the end of the year. In his last five starts, Halladay has two complete game wins and another start in which pitched nine shutout innings but left the game with a no-decision. After a brief hiccup in June in which he lost three straight decisions, Halladay is back on track.
