subject: Istanbul: Historically Modern [print this page]

Very few cities in and around Europe have a long history. Berlin, Lisbon, Paris, Cairo and some others constitute the list of places with a long history in Europe. Istanbul also joins the bunch because of its historical importance. This city lies on the straits and connects the two continents; Asia and Europe.

History of Istanbul is graced with such a recognition right from its beginning. It is the busiest town of Turkey and never sleeps like New York. While walking across the Bosphorous bridge at midnight or driving along the Bosphrous you will find this city really really awakened. The city's population is 12 million.

From whichever side you step into the city you will find the horizon; the scenery of the peninsula raising the skyline of the mighty mosques. And it will really be an unforgettable moment for you. Approach to the city is very easy. You can choose to get into Istanbul through Yesilky by the airport bus or taxi or by train to the European train station Sirkeci or by ship through the Dardanelles.

Some other fine attractions play a great role in drawing the attention of tourists from all across the globe. You should have at least one week to visit all the sights in the city. Museums, parks, covered bazaar and many other places are there for your interests. The best period for visiting Istanbul is between May and September. You should also not miss out on having a boat tour along the Bosphorus, zig zagging the cannel towards north, all the way to Black Sea Asia Site (Anadolu Kavagi). You will find many castles and mansions on the way.
