The bridge was supposed to start in 1867; but due to political and financial issues, the work was belated and it was started on 1970. For the next 13 years, the hard work of the engineers and Builders Brooklyn made it possible to open the bridge for the general people on May 24 of 1883. The designer of the bridge was John A. Roebling; but unfortunately he did not live long enough to see the final result of his creation. After his death, his son Washington Roebling started working as the active engineer in the project. But again bad luck fall and he became sick. After that, his wife, Emily Roebling take over the project while Washington remained the consultant; working from the home.
On the very first day of opening of the bridge, there were over 150,000 visitors crossed the bridge on foot and over 1,800 vehicles crossed the bridge.
