subject: Warehouse Management Becomes So Easy [print this page]

An automatic storage and retrieval system includes a continuous track and a plurality of individual storage units stacked in multiple columns or rows. Each storage unit includes wheels for engaging the continuous track for selective movement along the track. A conveyor apparatus is used to selectively move the storage units along the length of the continuous track between uppermost positions of adjacent columns, so as to support the storage unit as the storage unit passes gaps in the upper rail due to intermediate vertical rails extending downwardly intermediate ends thereof.

Accordingly, there is a continuing need for an automatic storage and retrieval system which is simplified, efficient and comparatively inexpensive. Moreover, there is a continuing need for an automatic storage and retrieval system which can inform a user whether or not an object is in a storage location; in which part of the storage location the object is located; and find the object no matter where the object is stored. There is a further need for an inventory control system that can associate certain information with an object to identify that object and its location. The present invention fulfills these needs and provides other related advantages.

The present invention resides in an automatic storage and retrieval system. The storage and retrieval system of the present invention generally comprises first and second tracks having a generally rectangular configuration, and spaced apart from one another in generally parallel fashion so as to cooperatively form a continuous track. A plurality of individual storage units stacked in multiple columns are disposed between the first and second tracks. Means are provided for selectively moving the storage units along the length of the continuous track.
