However, some countries do require entry visas for American citizens, and Ghana is one of them. You'll need to apply for the Ghana visa before you leave for your trip at the nearest Ghana Embassy.
As always, it pays to be prepared when you are applying for a Ghana visa. Requirements vary depending on the purpose of your trip to Ghana. Here's what you'll need to get your visa if you are traveling as a tourist:
You'll need 4 completed copies of the visa application form. The easiest thing to do would seem to be simply filling the application out once and then making copies. Be careful: you are allowed to photocopy the application, BUT each copy of the form must have your original signature on it. Fill everything out on the form except for the signature, make copies, and then sign each copy individually.
Include a copy of your international certificate of vaccination for yellow fever. Don't send the original. Keep it with you, as you need to have the original copy with you when you enter Ghana.
A copy of your round-trip plane tickets or your travel itinerary.
Your US passport. The expiration date must be more than 6 months in the future, and there needs to be at least one blank page in the back to accommodate the Ghana visa.
Visa fees: The amount you'll need to cover the visa depends on whether you are applying for a single-entry visa or a multiple-entry visa. Single-Entry visas cost $50. They are good for 3 months from the date they are issued, and allow you to enter and exit Ghana only once. Multiple-entry visas cost $80.00, but allow you to enter and exit the country multiple times. If you waited until the last minute, expedited service is available through the Ghana Embassy for an additional charge of $30.00.
