subject: Why hire a dog trainer? [print this page]

In most cases dog owners look at what their needs, schedule and budget is before they select a dog training service. Although these are very important it is equally important to look at your dogs needs. Two things that that you should consider:

Temperamentof your dog

Do you have adominantdog, timid dog, hyper dog?

Behaviour issues

Barking at door, Barking at strangers/other dogs, aggression, separation anxiety...etc

Here are some examples on dog training services:

Your dog is a puppy, great with other dogs and does not have a lot of "bad" issues.

In this case a puppy class might be the right thing. Socializing your dog isimportantbut it has to be done in a controlled way; one on one dog training is also an option.

Your dog is very timid, barks at the door but runs away. He barks during walks.

This dog might need one one one training since he lacks the confidence to be with many other dogs.

Your dog jumps at anyone at the door, barks at them but is very friendly.

The issues occur at your house and thereby should be addressed there as well.

Your dog is food driven and is over weight

A Food reward program might not be the right thing for this pet.

Your dog is afraid of strangers and very timid

Training that becomes too physical with this type of dog my cause more harm. Make sure the trainer has experience with timid dogs and will not become physical.

Every family and dog is different. Make sure you understand what your dog's needs are before you hire a dog training service. Search online but also talk to friends and family. Ask for references and talk to your local vet about what type of training is good for your dog.
