subject: Using Your Garage [print this page]

The first thing that you want to do is simply take a look around and really see what you're using this room for, and how you're using it. Has it turned into a big junk room where it's hard to find anything? Is it a big double garage that looks pretty barren except for your one little car? Simply looking around and realizing what you've been using it for so far can help you to start forming ideas on how you might want to use it in the future.

After you've taken a good look around your garage, start thinking of the possibilities, and how you could make this room work best for you. Do you use it to house your car, but would like it to serve more purposes than that? Do you wish there was room in there to actually park your car? Are you happy just parking your car in a carport, and would like to turn the room into something like a recreation room or woodworking shop? Start writing down or sketching some ideas. Think about how this room would serve the best function for you, and start making plans from there.

If you want to change or enhance your garage, take action! Once you've decided what you want, it's time to get to work. You could do small but significant things like adding more storage shelves or cabinets, or you could go all-out and do some major renovations. For the major renovations, you probably want to talk to a contractor, unless you have extensive experience in remodeling or building. If you do hire someone, be sure that they are fully licensed and bonded, and check references. They should also offer guarantees on their work.

If you're a homeowner, you're probably going to live with the garage that you have for a long time, so there's no reason why you shouldn't try to make it just the way you want it. Just like you'd do for any other room! Careful consideration and good planning is all you need to make the most of this room.
