subject: The Pros and Cons of Freelancing [print this page]

Freelancing is where you write articles or create other content such as videos, audio or presentations for a set price. If you are new to online marketing, and you do not have another job, then freelancing for others may be your best option so that you can pay your bills at the end of the month. However, just as with anything else, freelancing has its pros and cons, and here are a few:

The Pros

Fast Money. Most people who come online, do so because they are in desperate need of money. Either they have lost their job, or they just need extra money fast. Freelancing is the best way that you can accomplish your goals.

Lots of Work. Because the internet is flourishing the way it is, there are lots of webmasters who are in need of great content. This means that the work will never run out. Elance, Guru and WritingCareer have a lot of jobs posted that you can apply for. A lot of these are writing jobs, which means that you do not need any special equipment to get started. All you need is your computer and internet connection, and you are all set.

Learning Experience. Freelancing for others is a great learning experience. There is a lot that you can learn from someone else's guidelines which you can later apply to your own content. This in no way means that you just copy what you learned, but you can follow the basic principles.

Set Your Hours. With freelancing you have the opportunity to set your own hours so that you can still have time to do what you want to do. You have the choice to take on as much or as little work as you want.

The Cons

Not Residual. One of the greatest disadvantage of freelancing for others is that your earnings are not residual. This means that you will only be paid once for you work, and you will have to do it over and over again if you want those paychecks to keep rolling in.

Experience. As with any other job, you need to be experienced if you want to make the big money. This basically means that in order for you to be able to land high paying freelancing jobs, you need to be able to prove that you are capable of delivering high quality content.

Overall, freelancing is a great way for you to start making money online, but at the same time you should invest a proportion of your time to start your own online business.
