subject: Glenn Beck Restoring Honor Rally [print this page] The purpose of this rally is to restore the principles this country was founded on, namely truth, honor and integrity. It is also to honor those men and women in the armed forces and other notable citizens that embody these virtues.
The rally was also controversial though. Glenn Beck, the organizer and a conservative commentator was accused by some of dishonoring Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by having the rally at the same location that 47 years ago he made his well-known "I Have a Dream" stirring speech. Beck said that it was just a coincidence and that the date was chosen before he realized it was the same day.
Beck started the program saying, "Something that is beyond man is happening. America today begins to turn back to God." Like his speech the program was quite religious with gospel music and other church-type speeches. Numerous people there , who traveled from all over, on cars, trains, buses and planes, belonged to the Tea Party movement or were independents, Republicans, libertarians and mostly white.
The rally did manage to raise over $5 million dollars to donate to the organization called "Special Operations Warrior Foundation". This is an organization that helps the families who have a loved one who was hurt or killed while in the service of this country.
