But in this article, we'll be giving 7 simple tips that anyone can use to stack the odds in their favour, be it a casual punter who has the odd bet for fun or a full time professional
1. Pay attention to horses who's last run was at the same course and distance as today. Horses are creatures of habit and this can often improve on its last performance. The trainer obviously has his reasons for sending his runner back and watching these horses can throw up some big value winners.
2. Keep a very close eye on horses that have finished 1st,2nd,3rd or 4th in each of their last 4-5 runs of the current season. Such horses have shown they are consistent and that is always a good sign.
3. Pay attention to horses that have won over the distance D' or have won at this course C'. If there are several then go for the horse that wins the higher classes of races.
4. Look for horses that were favorites (preferably priced 5/2 or smaller) in their last run but today have much larger odds and are running in a race of the same or lesser class. Often these horse will have had a bad run and caused the public to lose confidence in them but this technique can throw up some big priced winners
5. If a horse is a large priced favorite (4/1 or larger) because of a notable drop in class (two levels or more) look for other horses that have done exactly the same thing but are on the market for higher odds. The lower priced horse is often one that has been tipped by popular pundits or the media and the others in a similar position can offer much better value
6. Look for horses that finished close to the winner (within 2 lengths) last time out but didn't place. These horses often get ignored and you can find some very good priced winners by backing them
7. Don't back horses that won last time out as long shots, often these races where just a fluke and the form is unlikely to be repeated. Due to their last win they often start with short prices and therefore offer bad value
