subject: Learning How To Snorkel [print this page]

Snorkeling is still one of the greatest outdoor adventures that a person can participate in today. The hidden worlds beneath the surface of the water remain largely unknown to most of the human population.

Pictures do not do this sea world justice when it comes to the experience you could have of seeing this underwater world for yourself. In addition to the many sites and new learning opportunities, many people enjoy snorkeling because it is a very relaxing activity.

The underwater world is so different from our everyday life, that floating in this world can help you find relief from the worries and cares of your everyday life. The water soothes the stress out of you.

By the time your return to the surface, you are ready to take on the challenges that normal life brings. However, snorkeling does take practice.

The first time you snorkel you may feel anxious to be surrounded by so much water. Despite this anxiety, the key to snorkeling correctly is to relax.

Do not rush yourself when you are snorkeling for the first time. It takes practice to not feel breathless, fatigue or cramps while snorkeling.

However, one you learn how to snorkeling without suffering from these side effects you will experience the enjoyment of stress relief and exploration in a new world. As a beginner, it may be difficult to believe that breathing underwater through the tube can become natural, but it can.

They key is to not worry, let yourself relax and practice. If you are learning how to snorkel it is definitely best to practice in shallow waters where you will not be in danger if you do something incorrectly.

To begin snorkeling, put the mouthpiece in your mouth and lay down in the water on your stomach. Then, simply float and gently bite down on the mouth piece.

Remember to breathe out into the tube before you breathe in. Sometimes water gets into the tube and you want to remove this before you breathe it in.

Breathing in water would definitely be a surprise and it is likely you will have to stand up and cough the water out. As you practice breathing through tube, take slow, deep breathes.

Be cautious, but do not panic. It is much easier to breathe correctly if you relax.

Since you are practicing in the shallows, you can always lift your head for a full breathe of air. When you become accustomed to breathing, you may want to move to the next step.

The position where you are laying on your stomach and facing down into the water is known as resting position. This position is critical to master before you head out into deeper water.

The next thing you will need to learn is how to go below water. Begin by placing you head and snorkel below the surface of the water.

You should be able to feel the water entering your snorkel. This will tell you that you are underwater.

As your snorkel is full of water, you will need to hold your breath. It will seem strange at first to hold your breath with an open mouth.

However, it is very easy to learn how to do. You simply must remember to never breathe in while the snorkel is filled with water.

When you return to the surface and the snorkel is above water, you will need to clear the water from the snorkel. Exhale forcefully and the water should be removed from your snorkel.

You should then be able to breathe in. Make sure that you do not breathe out while underwater because you will not have any air to clear your snorkel with when you surface again.

In addition, whenever you breathe out, you will want to instinctively breathe in. However, your snorkel is full of water.

As you continue snorkeling, do not forget that water can splash up into the snorkel tube. You will want to cautiously breathe in to avoid breathing water and exhale with force to remove water.

Skilled snorkelers can breathe in air past the water to have air to push the water out of their tube if they run out of air. When you can do this, you have mastered snorkeling.

By this point you should be very comfortable with being in deep water and breathing through a snorkel. However, as you are learning make sure you swim at a comfortable pace so you do not get out of breath.
