subject: The Proper Way Of Wearing A Kippah [print this page]

To start of, let's have a brief rundown on kippahs. A kippah, or yarmulke, is a round skullcap worn by Jewish men and boys. Some administrative individuals mentioned that even though wearing a kippah is not mandated by the Torah, it likely infers from the vesture of the High Priest several years ago when the Temple in Jerusalem was established. The High Priest attire comes with a head-covering. According to Rabbi Shraga Simmons, wearing a kippah is a "means to draw out one's inner sense of respect for God."

Basically, kippahs are not just ordinary head coverings or a regular hat, it is very symbolic and needs to be worn properly to uphold the traditions which was practiced back then and today. So how is it properly worn? Here are the easy steps:

STEP 1: Pick out a fittingly sized kippah. According to the rabbis, kippah should be big enough to be seen from all angles.

STEP 2: Choose a kippah that matches your personality, however, still be conscious of the traditional styles. You can choose from different types and styles of kippahs. A kippah may be made out of fabric or crocheted. It can be embellished in many different ways, with applique, needlepoint, fabric paint, embroidery, or designs knitted into it if the kippah is crocheted. The designs may be nonrepresentational or might add the owner's name.

STEP 3: Wear your kippah at the proper occasions. Jewish boys and older men wear their kippahs all the time but some Jews may not wish to put in their kippah day in and day out. Elders recommend to however, that even those who do not wear a head covering at all times, will cover it as a sign of respect when taking part in spiritual services such as at a shiva house, or a wedding or cemetery.
