subject: How Can I Clean My Rough-out Danner Boots? [print this page] If you bought a pair of Danner boots recently and they were noted as being rough-out leather or roughed out suede, you might have started to wonder how in the world you are supposed to clean these. No matter what material your boots are made from, it's always important to clean them and maintain them. Just by taking a few minutes a day or once a week will allow your boots to last for years to come. One of the most important things about having leather is the quality of the shoe, but leather also takes a good bit of maintenance, especially when it comes to moisture.
Sometimes leather can crack and or get mold growing on them if you don't keep them nice and dry. Cleaning rough out leather boots is a little different from cleaning smooth glossy leather. In general, any product safe for suede or nubuck is suitable for rough out boots. First off, make sure you take your boots outside and knock all of the dirt and grime off of the bottom soles of the shoes. If necessary, use a bristled brush to get the dirt off of the soles of the Danner boots. Next, you want to brush the rough out leather with a leather or suede brush. Don't use the same brush you used on the soles!
You would defeat the purpose of keeping the leather clean if you do this! Next, apply a few drops of suede or nubuck cleaner to a clock and gently, in a circular motion, rub the cleaner all over the leather. Make sure you let the cleaner stay on the leather for a few minutes so that it soaks in and works on the stains. Next, wipe it off and then brush it again with your bristly brush. Protect rough out leather boots from wetness and discolorations by applying a stain repellent. Use one suited for suede and nubuck. These are very easy to put on; just hold the spray bottle several inches away from the boot to direct a steady mist of spray, and move the bottle up and down to cover all leather surfaces with the spray.
Let the boots dry before wearing; most products suggest waiting several hours at least after spraying. By the way, these guidelines go for other brands as well, which is great if you have a few different brands of shoes besides Danner boots such as Belleville, Bates, Converse, Wolverine, etc. Note that if you keep these types of leather boots dry, and cleaned, you will in turn have them last for years to come - it doesn't matter how much you use them! For the most part, depending on the quality of the brand and the materials, most boots will last up to 6 years if you take care of them!
