subject: Heated Hair Rollers - Styling Techniques [print this page]

With long hair, once it is set in heated rollers (whether it has been rolled to achieve volume or not), when the rollers are taken out the hair can either be brushed with a large paddle brush to get soft movement and a slight curl. Or, you can experiment by leaving the hair in the rollers for longer. In these cases, it is best to brush through with either a brush or fingers and then in sections, twirl the hair around to keep a 'spiral' like curl going throughout the style.

Medium sized rollers would be recommended to give long hair a spiral like curl, however to gain volume and get more of a wave on long hair larger heated rollers are required. Once they are taken out, dressing the hair through again with the fingers and 'dragging' it slightly will help to create movement, especially if your style is layered. You can also achieve a similar effect with hair straighteners. To get a big voluptuous look, backcombing at the root and lots of hairspray will add extra support once it has been set. Serums and creams are beneficial to use when dressing out with your fingers to help smooth any fly-away bits along the hair and giving it more of a defined look.

The same techniques can be used on shorter-medium length styles especially when it comes to creating more volume. Medium sized hair rollers will be good for shorter hair, not to create a curl but to simply put a bend in it to add a bit of volume and movement. Similarly, with medium length hair smaller hair rollers will help to create a curl and larger heated rollers will benefit the hair in regards to volume.

Both hair straighteners and heated rollers have evolved considerably in recent years. One company has now created a pod with rollers that will heat up in under 4 seconds. Heating from the inside out, heat is retained whilst in the hair, yet to touch they are cool. This makes it much quicker and easier to achieve a style than by the traditional methods.

The pod accommodates five different sizes of rollers so it is really easy to experiment with different techniques to roll the hair and to dress out, creating either big, soft waves that are brushed through for a classic look or tighter curls that are more close to a perm!
