subject: Paul Mccartney Tickets - Pbs Special To Air Wednesday, July 28 [print this page]

Though it was filmed in June, PBS will finally air the Paul McCartney Gershwin Prize musical special that honored the former Beatle with a songwriting award. The special was filmed in the White House's East Room and featured songs from McCartney, Stevie Wonder, Elvis Costello, Dave Grohl, Emmylou Harris, Herbie Hancock, the Jonas Brothers and others.

Sir Paul McCartney, who is a huge Obama fan, said performing at the acoustically advanced room was "almost like a little family gathering" to the Associated Press and that the White House event "turned out to be great." The concert will air as part of the new PBS special "In Performance: At the White House," on July 28 at 8 p.m. Even if you don't have time to catch the show, Macca will be around as he promotes his latest album on tour. McCartney, already a fan of President Obama, was even more impressed with the 44th president upon his arrival to the White House. Talking to the Associated Press following his performance, McCartney said, "The fact that [President Obama] reached out to my crew was very heartwarming. It takes a great man to do that. In this business, some people are just jerks."

The show was hosted by the President and Michelle Obama and honored McCartney with the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. Despite some somber moments, like when Obama mentioned the BP oil spill, McCartney had fun, saying, "After the last eight years, it's great to have a president who knows what a library is..." Jokes aside, the evening was a celebration of music and got the entire room standing.

While the White House performance might have been the highlight of his career, McCartney's year has been filled with excitement. The former Beatle continues his Up and Coming Tour with his band, performing to sold-out stadiums and arenas around the world. Breaking sales records for the star, the show also became the longest running tour with band members Paul "Wix" Wickens, Brian Ray, Rusty Anderson and Abe Laboriel Jr. Touring together since 2002's Back in the World Tour, the group has traveled the globe.

Though such memorable moments are hard to name, McCartney said on his website, "The great thing is that we have grown into a band. It's funny because I always felt we were a bunch of guys playing together...," and now he admits they are more than just a group who can play well together.

McCartney's fame has outlasted his former band members. Though he was never hailed as the best musician to come out of that pop group (often failing in comparison to John Lennon), McCartney's career has lasted decades beyond his former mates. Hitting both the British and American charts since he began a solo career in the '70s, McCartney has seen an unprecedented number of number one singles and albums. While critics often had trouble accepting his songwriting skills, fans continue to purchase the music that has kept him in concert for decades.
