Playgroundsoftenalsohavefacilitiesforplayinginformalgamesofadultsports,suchasabaseballdiamond,askatingarena,abasketballcourt,oratetherball.
"Public"commercialplaygroundequipmentreferstoequipmentintendedforuseintheplayareasofparks,schools,childcarefacilities,institutions,multiplefamilydwellings,restaurants,resorts,andrecreationaldevelopments,andotherareasofpublicuse.
Atypeofplaygroundcalledaplayscapeisdesignedtoprovideasafeenvironmentforplayinanaturalsetting.
Recognizingtheneedforsuch,formerPresidentTheodoreRooseveltstatedin1907:Citystreetsareunsatisfactoryplaygroundsforchildrenbecauseofthedanger,becausemostgoodgamesareagainstthelaw,becausetheyaretoohotinsummer,andbecauseincrowdedsectionsofthecitytheyareapttobeschoolsofcrime.Neitherdosmallbackyardsnorornamentalgrassplotsmeettheneedsofanybuttheverysmallchildren.Olderchildrenwhowouldplayvigorousgamesmusthaveplacesespeciallysetasideforthem;and,sinceplayisafundamentalneed,playgroundsshouldbeprovidedforeverychildasmuchasschools.Thismeansthattheymustbedistributedoverthecitiesinsuchawayastobewithinwalkingdistanceofeveryboyandgirl,asmostchildrencannotaffordtopaycarfare.
