subject: Stock Your First Aid Kit [print this page]

A fully stocked First Aid Kit is all important in the event of an accident whether at home, in the car, or because of a major natural disaster. Ideally, there should be two kits, one at home and a smaller one in the car. After you have gathered your items for each kit, locate a medium to large sized container with an easy opening lid that will accommodate all of them with room to spare. Make it one that is easy to transport, with handles. Make a list of the items included, put it in a plastic sleeve and attach it to the outside of the containers. Include expiration dates and if any prescription drugs are included, add dosage requirements. Be sure and check the kit once a month to change out expired items and remind everyone where it is kept.

A Home First Aid Kit

Include aspirin, ibuprofen, acetaminophen, cough suppressants, antihistamines and decongestants. Include several sizes of bandages, safety pins, elastic wraps, gauze, adhesive tape, a sharp pair of scissors, antibacterial wipes, antibiotic ointment, antiseptic cleanser, such as hydrogen peroxide or alcohol, a self-activating hot or cold pack, and a tweezers.

A Portable First Aid Kit

This first aid kit should be roomy and hardy enough to withstand temperature changes and abuse of the car trunk. With this kit you will always have the assurance of knowing you can handle whatever happens when you are away from home.

It is important for the portable first aid kit to contain the same items as the home first aid kit. There are additional items that will be invaluable. Prescription drugs with medication dosage are very important. Include a thermometer, CPR instructions, rubber or latex gloves and a good flashlight with extra batteries and compact space blankets. Emergency numbers and a prepaid cell phone, too. Visit your portable kit regularly to check on expired items and to remind yourself that it's there.
