km, a densely wooded district of rosewood, teak, bamboo and other deciduous trees, throbbing with a fascinating range of creatures, large and small. Tigers, of which the sanctuary has a fair number, are amongst its most elusive denizens. Elephants in particular are Wayanad''s star performers. Other animals that roam this wildlife sanctuary include leopards, monkeys, deer, bison, wild dogs and hundreds of birds and reptile.

There are not many options to eat out in Wayanad. There are some small and very basic eateries near the check post but your safest bet would be to eat at your accommodation.
Activities
Take a jeep safari and explore the sanctuary. The best time to see wildlife is in the early hours of the morning or in the evening right before sunset. You have to obtain permission from the Forest Department to visit the park and taking a local guide with you is mandatory. Elephants, deer, gaurs
and wild pigs can easily be spotted here. If you''re really lucky you may even spot a leopard or tiger. Wayanad is a paradise for spotting a huge variety of birds including crested serpent eagles, the king vulture, nightjars and red-wattled lapwings.
How to get there by Air
Calicut International Airport and Cochin International Airport are the nearest airports to Wayanad. From here you can take a bus or a taxi to reach the sanctuary.
How to get there by Rail
Kozhikode is also the closest railhead to Wayanad. Kozhikode is a major station on the Konkan line for all Kerala bound trains. It is well connected to other major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Goa, Chennai, Coimbatore, Kochi, and Thiruvananthapuram.
How to get there by Bus
Wayanad has convenient road connections to Kozhikode, Mysore, Kunnur and Udhagamandalam (Ooty). Buses, either of the State Transport Corporation or a swift private coach, also go to Wayanad: alternatively, visitors can hire a cab or rent a car if they don''t have their own transportation.
Best time to Visit
The sanctuary is open throughout the year except during the monsoons months, when it becomes too difficult to navigate vehicles through the slushy roads. the best time to visit is between the winter months of October- February.
Where to Stay
Authentic back to nature accommodation in the form of forest lodges and rest houses is available just outside the park. If you are in want of accommodations with higher standards stay at either Sulthan Bathery (16 km from the sanctuary) or Kalpetta, both are close to the sanctuary.
