subject: The National Stadium In Beijing [print this page]

The National Stadium (also Birds Nest) was the main stadium of the 29th Olympiad in 2008. Occupying an area of 21 hectares, it has a floor space of 258,000 square meters, with a seating capacity of 91,000, including 11,000 temporary seats.

The shape of the Stadium is like a birds nest, which has an internal meaning: the hope for the future. The outside structure of Birds Nest is mainly huge steel, with total 24 truss columns. The maximum height is 68.5 meters, and the lowest height is 42.8 meters.

The venue hosted the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and Paralympics Games, the track and field competitions, and the football finals. After the Olympics, the stadium became a large-scale sports and entertainment facility for the residents of Beijing, and stands as both an architectural landmark and a symbol of Beijings Olympic legacy. Now, the service facilities in the center area are all sustained. At the same time, there will be 20 fixed dining sites added and 50 mobile vehicles maintained.

In addition, in the center area, three medical service stations, 9 tourist information centers, 9 fixed toilets and 21 temporary toilets are set up. In the external area, some toilets are set up, the landscape flag of Paralympics are retained, the park signs and general urban landscape signs are restored, and the rest chairs for audience are increased.

Many experts on architecture all thought that the construction of this stadium was not only a historical landmark of 2008 Olympic Games, but also has a creative meaning in the history of world architecture development.
