subject: Do-it-yourself Roofing: 8 Steps To Installing Asphalt Roof Shingles [print this page]

Calculate the roof area where you plan on installing the shingles.

When installing shingle roofing, it is okay to layer over a single, older layer, if there is no water damage. Or, you can remove the old asphalt shingles first using a pitch fork. Consider renting a dumpster for the old shingles.

The Process of Installing Roof Shingles

These basic steps in installing roof shingles include the following: Remove and discard the old shingles (if necessary). Nail down 30-pound felt underlayment, spacing the nails 6 to 8 inches apart. Install a galvanized drip edge along the perimeter of the roof in the area where you plan to install the new shingles. Draw a centerline to the peak of the roof that is perpendicular to the drip edge. Install your first row (starter course) of asphalt shingles. Start the shingle layout by building a pyramid of asphalt shingle strips. Continue with this pyramid pattern of installing asphalt shingles until you get to the top. When you reach the final layer, install a ridge cap of shingles.

Although some do-it-yourselfers make installing roof shingles look easy, roofing ranks among the most difficult home improvement projects. In addition, roofing has its dangers particularly since you are working high off the ground where falling is a risk. Unless you are an expert carpenter, you may want to consider hiring a licensed contractor for installing roof shingles. Often working with one of your local roofing contractors can save you the time and headaches that come with trying to tackle a roofing project yourself.
