These jesters were hired and were "licensed" by the court to entertain. Together with their license is their privilage to act foolish and stupid. They were given the authority to be grossly improper in front of the Ladies and Gentlemen of the court without being deviant. In short, they could do whatever they want, proper or improper, just to entertain people. They were even referred as toys and puppets by the upper ton.
In literature, the jesters were symbol of honesty and common sense. Because of their license to act fool they could deliberately criticize their masters, mistress and even guests without being punished. They take advantage of their license to mock and freely speak advice and observation to their monarchs-both great and folly.
Yet, these jesters came to an end after the Civil War, there is just no room for entertainment under the new leader. That was also the struggling point of theaters. Yet, modern jesters resurfaced again in a form of a Buffoon. A buffoon is a person who uses ridiculous look and clothing to amuse people. They are clown-like in other words. The appearance of these clowns was much similar to the jesters.
However, these jesters were no longer amusing nowadays. They are more like the evil versions of clowns. If the clowns are the happy people. The evil jesters are the bad counterpart. Therefore, the usual image of the court jesters became an evil version of the modern clowns these days.
