When a fighter goes down in the ring or octagon a referee quickly steps into separate the fighters, and a doctor and friends are close by to help if the fighter can't get up on his own.
Sometimes though you will see a lot of grit and determination, and before the count is over a hardened competitor pulls himself up and says he's ready for more, and everyone can respect that. Accept when you're in a real fight you go down your at the mercy of your attacker and they can do any from pounding you to death, to strangling you, to even sexually assaulting you once your out of the fight. So, get the idea out of your head that is ever acceptable to go to the ground like in competition sports, because the other guy won't play fair.
The first step to not getting knocked down is to be aware of your surroundings, and if a situation like a dark alley puts you at a disadvantage avoid it all together. The next step is to avoid letting an attacker use their advantage against you in a fight. If they make the first move get out of the way.
In our early training modules we show you a variety of techniques to get out of the way of a hit from any direction, and what you can do to counter attack. Now if you haven't been able to avoid an encounter and they have made their move yet it is time for step three which is an all out attack. That's right the best thing you can do to avoid getting knocked down is to attack first. They might be bigger or stronger, but if you're the first to attack they won't get to use their muscle against you in a fight.
Some self defense training is the difference between people saying how you survived such a brutal beating and hearing people praise you for taking out the other guy so fast. It doesn't matter who started the fight, but if you end it fast you'll only be better off in the end.
