subject: The Basics Of Dog Breeding [print this page]

Dogs are called man's best friend and often become a part of the family. The idea of your dog having a littler of fun little puppies can be exciting. Breeding a dog may seem like a simple task however this is not true. There are many things to consider and timing is important. Before you decide to breed your dog you should know the basics and ask yourself if you are doing it for the right reason. Many prefer to keep dogs purebred while others believe that crossbreeding will help dogs retain good qualities and lose bad qualities affecting over bred or inbred breeds.

Since knowledge of the dog's genetics and health is important when breeding do not breed a dog with an unknown history. Any dogs that are meant to be bred should undergo health checks to ensure they are in good health. This will reduce the chances of passing on hereditary health problems including poor eyesight, bad hips and joints, allergies and even heart conditions.

Be sure the dogs are checked for parasites and that all vaccinations are up to date. Ask your vet if they believe the dog is of a proper age for breeding, usually around 2 years old.

In order for a female dog to become pregnant the mating must take place during her estrus, or fertile period. Some breeds will begin their heat or season cycles at the young age of six months while others do not begin until 18 months. Commonly this heat cycle will last for three weeks. You may notice male dogs paying her more attention and she may lick herself more than usual. The estrus is when her bloody discharge changes to a light pink and she shows interest by flirting with males. This is the optimum time for breeding. The male and female should mate on their own with little more human interaction than placing them near one another. The male will mount the female and begin thrusting. The hope is that he will penetrate her and form a tie within her vulva. The two will become stuck together and this stage can last anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes. This is the process in which the sperm is transferred from the male to the female.

If she conceives her litter should arrive in 58 to 65 days. During her pregnancy it is especially important to keep her calm and healthy. Make sure she has a constant supply of fresh food and water available. When the time comes for her to deliver her pups she will need a quiet area with a blanket. If you are planning to sell your new puppies don't forget to acquire the necessary license.
