A unique feature of the sanctuary is the presence of a huge number and variety of hornbills. It is an endangered bird and very rare in the rest of the country but found in the hundreds at Dandeli. In addition to fish, the river also has a large number of crocodiles. Since the number of big game is not as high as in other wildlife sanctuaries, sighting of these exotic animals calls a fair bit of luck and patience.

Go white water rafting on the River Kali in Dandeli- with fast flowing currents and high rapids, it surely is a thrilling experience!

How to get there by Air

The nearest airport to Dandeli is Belgaum which is about 90 kms away and is connected to Bangalore and Mumbai by direct flights. From here you would have to hire a taxi to take you to the sanctuary.

How to get there by Rail

The nearest railhead being Dharwad is 55 kms away from Dandeli. Your best bet would be to take the Chennamma Express which departs from Bangalore.

How to get there by Bus

You can drive from Bangalore to Dandeli which is about 480 km away and it makes for approximately an 11 hour drive. If you are not in the mood for driving the long distance there are plenty of overnight buses that ply from Bangalore. Catch the direct VRL bus connection or the KSRTC buses.

Best time to Visit

October to June is the best time to visit. Avoid the monsoon as the rains become rather heavy in these parts.

Kavala Caves lie 25 kms from Dandeli and these prehistoric caves are a huge draw. You have to descend about 375 steps to get to the caves and it would be wise to carry a torch. Syntheri Rock is deep inside the sanctuary itself and it is a huge granite monolith that is also home

to bees and pigeons. Shiroli Peak is 25 kms from Dandali and is the highest point in Uttara Kannada. It offers great view of the peaks of the Western Ghats. Kulgi Nature Camp has a nature interpretation center and also a small museum. It is 14 kms from Dandeli.
