subject: Too Much Stimulation With Today's Technology [print this page] Having the ability to access to the internet at just about any time and from any place has made working and playing easier than ever. In terms of accessibility and ease of use that is. It doesn't make our daily lives any less hectic and busy. In fact, all of this accessibility has done is make everybody's expectations that much higher. Nobody can get away from it and you can be reached at any time and in any place. There is nowhere to escape and the only way to do it is by turning everything off. Of course, you don't necessarily want to be out of the loop for a great deal of time, but it is nice to do once and a while.
Of course you can turn everything off, but your co-workers who need you at an exact moment bay not be so understanding. Things aren't the same as they were 10 years ago. That's when hours counted. Today, it's minutes that count. Things have sped up so fast that you almost have to be in contact with the rest of the world at all times no matter how annoying and inconvenient it is.
Think about how reliant you are to these devices and think about how reliant everybody else is. You can't go anywhere, the store, the mall, even on vacation without seeing hordes of people looking down at their phones or portable devices while they are walking round. You see it everywhere, with people and Bluetooth headsets and any other kind of fancy gear that you can think about.
What is really so important that you can't enjoy a quiet day at the beach or a relaxing day on the golf course that you need to answer the cell phone? There are times the cell phone should be turned off and it's a sad commentary that priests in churches are now forced to ask their congregation to turn off their cell phones before Mass. Chances are that the cell phone ring goes off at least once during a service anyway.
It's like these people are addicted to their devices and can't live without them. These things are great, when you use them for what they are made for. You just have to remember that they are tools, tools to make your life easier and if they start making your life more difficult than it might be time to reevaluate what you are using them for. Whenever you have to rely on something so heavily, then it may be getting out of hand.
