If you are new to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or even have some knowledge about different martial arts you may look at this and believe it is much easier to progress your belts in BJJ, but this is not the case. In fact, the time it takes to get from your white belt to your black belt usually would be around 10 12 years. Unlike other martial arts that make you test to get your belts, In Brazilian Jiu Jitsu your instructor decides to give you your new Jiu Jitsu Belt promotions whenever he believes you are ready. Some instructors also use a stripe system to know how close you are to your next belt level since obtaining the higher belt may take years. Students usually would be getting 4 stripes on their belt and their fifth stripe would be their new belt promotion.

Many Jiu Jitsu schools use these belt systems for their kids which is mostly so they do not get bored. They would not want to give a 9 year old boy a blue belt since he has been training for 2 years but instead could obtain his yellow belt. This kid belt system stops once they hit the age of 16. From that point on they would be using the adult Jiu Jitsu Belt system.
Remember, there is no set syllabus for the techniques you should know in order to get your blue or any other belt. Instead, students are promoted after they show they can deal with various situations that the next belt level would be able to do so. Once the Instructor believes the student is ready he will promote him to the next belt level by giving him his new belt. If you would like to progress your belts as fast as you can the recommendation would be to make sure you are training with the right Jiu Jitsu gear, train as often as you can and of course always keep in shape.
