subject: What Are The Reasons For Blood Sugar Level Problems? [print this page]

Diabetes is common worldwide and many people are affected without even realizing it.The two main types of diabetes can not be cured although they can, in some cases be prevented and controlled. If you are afraid you are at risk you might ask what are the causes of diabetes?

Your blood sugar levels are controlled by an organ in your body called the pancreas. If your pancreas is not able to produce any, or sufficient insulin then it means that the glucose concentrations in your blood are not able to be adequately controlled, it also means you have diabetes. The illness is diagnosed by a urine sample.

There are a number of causes of type one diabetes. This type of the illness means that the body is unable to produce any insulin at all, therefore the body has no way of self regulating the blood sugar level. There is evidence that there is a genetic link that can cause this type of diabetes which becomes apparent in the teenage years or in childhood.

There is often a family history of the illness in someone who develops type one. Twins have a 50 per cent likelihood of both developing diabetes if one of the twins suffers from it. Problems with a persons immune system can lead to a person body cells attacking it's own pancreas, therefore destroying the cells that produce insulin.

Environmental factors can have an impact on glucose control. People who have suffered from viruses such as mumps, rubella and measles are more likely to develop type one diabetes. Other environmental factors, such as where you live, have been shown to increase your risk factor. People who live in Finland and Sardinia have a high incidence of type one diabetes, although it is not clear exactly why.

Type two diabetes is the most common kind with 80 to 90 per cent of diabetes sufferers being identified with the illness. It is also known as adult onset diabetes. It causes a reduced amount of insulin being produced in the pancreas and usually becomes apparent around the age of forty and is caused by a number of things.

Too many people in our modern world are eating an excess of fats, proteins and sugars. It is this along with being overweight that can lead to the development of type two diabetes. Eating an excess of these foods, leading to obesity, can reduce the bodies capability to produce insulin therefore reducing it's ability to control blood sugar levels.

If you have been under a degree of emotional strain then the sugar levels in your blood are likely to be altered. If the emotional strain has a significant effect then it can contribute to causing type two diabetes. Smoking has also been found to be a risk factor.

It is important to eat a healthy and balanced diet for anyone. For people who are in the high risk categories of developing diabetes it is even more important. Having an exercise regime and watching what you eat may not stop you developing a lack of insulin but it will certainly lessen your chances. It is vital that you receive treatment for diabetes so if you are at all concerned make sure you contact your health care provider for a simple test.
