subject: How Different Water Filter Systems Work [print this page]

Water is one of the most important elements that all creatures need. For human beings, drinking water has to be clean and hygienic otherwise, unhealthy water can lead to fatal health issues and diseases. No matter how tough circumstances one is capable of surviving, pure drinking water is always a necessity. That is why explorers pack their outdoor water filter bottles along with other camping supplies. However, water filters are not only a part of outdoor camping gear. They are equally necessary in houses and industries too.

The water filteratiopn system is being used since hundreds of years and since then humans discovered diseases and their cure, they understood the importance of safe and pure drinking water. Old ways of water purification included boiling and distillation. It is said that the amount of contaminants found in water today is more than it was in old times. Therefore, we need stronger and powerful purification systems today.

The water that comes through taps is not healthy to drink, and has many bacteria, injurious organisms, cists and other contaminants. Some purification systems may deprive the water of its healthy chemicals and minerals while others might add these essentials in the water. Let's take a look at few of the most common water purification systems used in houses these days.

Carbon water filters: This kind of filters generally has a carbon cartridge composes of coconut husk when the liquid passes through the cartridge, it absorbs all the impurities except for sediments. It is the most commonly used kind of water filter in our homes.

Charcoal water filter: It can be of two types, it can be a carbon block filter or Activated Silver Impregnated charcoal filter. In both cases, it can absorb more impurities than a carbon filter. However, carbon filters may not decrease the PH level of acidic water. These filters also come with a unique micron ratings. Only a system with a micron rating less than 0.01 is capable of filtering out viruses.

Ceramic Water filter: The basic element that aids in purification process in ceramic filter is Diatomaceous earth. It is a fossil element that is composed of silicon shells and this element absorbs the tiny impurities and bacteria from the water and a layer of silver helps in reducing growth of these impurities.

Reverse Osmosis: This kind of filter systems is said to be the most successful filter system to date. It clears out most of the residues and impurities that other kinds of filters might have left out. One drawback, however, is the filteration of useful minerals along other impurities. According to scientists and researchers, water without these essentials can be equally dangerous. Hence, these elements must be addedagain in order to make the water healthy in true sense.

UV filter systems: In these types of filter systems, a high frequency ray is introduced into the water container. The light instantly kills all the impurities present in the water. Though, it is a quick and rapid way to filter a glass of water, the result is never gaurenteed without a laboratory test.
