subject: Computer Controlled Fountains [print this page]

Fountains are visually arresting water features. As a matter of fact, their calming and relaxing qualities are what made them become permanent staples in many indoor and outdoor spaces. Traditionally, the designs of these water features were once restricted to free flowing water cascading over natural stones. However, with the inception of technology, fountain pieces today can now be manipulated through the use of computers in order to exemplify differing effects that further augment their appeal; below are some of the most notable designs in computer-controlled fountain furnishings.

First in line are the popular dancing fountains. As their name implies, these water features automatically dances to the music as they are electronically controlled by a custom-built electro-hydro valves that makes the water flow in accordance to the music. For the music, a high quality amplification music system is used. As a result, the water dances according to its own interpretation of the music.

Interactive fountains or jumping jets are water features where people are permitted to directly interact and play with the water they produce. Similar to the dancing fountain, this is also programmed electronically. It is usually placed on a flat ground surface with a hidden water pool underneath it, which actually serves as its main water source. This fountain shoots up water from the ground at regular intervals, making it ideal for parks and playgrounds.

Another type of computer maneuvered water feature is the waterscreen fountain which exudes the same appearance as a slate fountain, and can either be a stand-alone or wall mounted fixture. It has thousands of jet water flowing down a pool or a very large basin. As its name implies, this fountain acts more as a video projection screen where advertisements, programs and laser shows could be integrated. However, this is only effective in the dark similar to a video projector.

Other than these large water features commonly used outdoors, there are also electronic portable water jets suitable for indoor commercial and residential spaces. The most common of which are the wall mounted fountain and tabletop fountain. Although traditional wall fountain pieces are still widely used today, contemporary fountain pieces of this genre are more technologically grandiose in style. They may come with water cascading over piles of uneven rocks or water flowing over series of succeeding waterfalls that are usually lighted with colored lights.

Meanwhile, electronic portable tabletop fountain pieces of today are also highly ornate in designs and finishes. Materials may range from fiber glass, terracotta, marble and metals. But, the best thing about these portable water features is that they can now be integrated with color shifting quartz halogen underwater lamps as well as fog or mist system. Basically, all these water jets have evolved profoundly in order to keep up with the technological demands of today.
