subject: Planning For Prom [print this page]

Contrary to popular belief, prom is more than just buying a dress and putting on some make up. For it to be everything you dreamed of, some careful and early planning is needed.

For everything to be organized, you may want a small yet attractive journal for this special occasion. Your diary for the event may be a nice little book from the stationery store that you selected specifically for this event. The most important thing is picking a date, so let's assume you've done that. So let's move on to the other things. Some things to put on your to do list include buying the ticket, planning the transportation, choosing a dress and accessories, and planning an after-party shindig.

Advance Planning is Key

They key is to plan ahead and don't just take my word for it. Take your own school as proof, if you need it. As early as February or March, most schools already issue prom packets. This a kit that informs you everything you need to know including forms, protocol, and deadlines. So keep it safe. To remind you of the important dates, you might even want to take some notes in your prom journal.

Your Ride

A big part of going to the prom is riding in a limousine. You need to remember though that there aren't many limousines around. Early reservations need to be made. Be sure you have a written statement of everything you are promised when booking your ride. This is vital because mistakes can happen, especially when people are busy. The last thing you want is to miss out on you big night because your ride didn't show up.

Limousines are expensive and could take out a big piece of your budget so getting some couples in on the action wouldn't be a bad idea. The more people are in on it, the less each of you have to spend.

Wardrobe

Whether you are buying a dress or renting a tux, if you wait until the last minute you will have to settle for what's left, if anything. Dress shops and bridal boutiques will need time for such things as special ordering in your size or color, or doing alterations. As an added incentive, most tux rental shops offer discounts for early shoppers.

What Happens After?

Most proms go by the Cinderella curfew, midnight. By then you'd have consumed enough to give you a sugar rush until the morning. A couple of things to consider if you're planning a post-prom party. Transportation to the venue and back home needs to be arranged. Check with the limo company if your service has a time constraint.

If you plan to go out to a restaurant, call ahead to make sure they welcome prom night partygoers or to make reservations. Some eateries get nervous at the sight of teenagers in groups and you may be turned away at the door.

Planning ahead puts you in control. When you know that you have taken care of the details, the evening will take care of itself.
