subject: Three Tips For Basketball Coaches [print this page]

Coaching in any sport such as basketball is a great way to be able to teach your players the advantages of teamwork and discipline. It is also a good way to show them how important it is to have strategies and plans in place.

Many basketball coaches will have first hand knowledge of the game before trying to coach their teams. But it is possible to use other coaching techniques to teach basketball players effectively. Here are a few of those techniques.

1. It is best to be totally honest with all of your players. By teaching them where their strengths and weaknesses lie they will be able to improve on the part of their game that is not up to standard. Do not worry too much about hurting their feelings in this case.

2. By being honest about your player's skill levels and helping them to get better in those departments you will save them for any embarrassment when they fall short of the required skills needed for the game.

3. Good coaches will always involve the parents of the players in their training routines. Many good players have progressed thanks to the positive influences of their parents.

Having the support of the parents is critical for you as the coach and for the player themselves knowing that their parents are fully supporting them. With the parents help you can all pull together for the same goal.

Coaches always like to win games but it is equally important for them to teach the players other values that can be as important off the field as on it.

As with most coaching jobs the tasks will change as the players develop and get more experienced. Coaches that can adapt their techniques will always be able to get the best out of their players.
