subject: A Better Home For A Better Mood [print this page]

Believe it or not, the mood that you are in each day affects everything that you do, from how well you perform at work to the quality of your relationships.

Studies have shown that there are some simple things you can do to drastically improve your mood on a daily basis, but I bet you didn't think they had anything to do with a new house. Let's take a look at 5 ways to improve your mood and what they say about your house.

Get More Natural Light

Of course this is the first one; everyone knows that sunlight is a key mood-enhancer. How do the windows in your house measure up? Are they tiny like a porthole on a ship? Doctors recommend that we take in as much natural, full spectrum, light as possible, without getting sunburned of course and what better way to do that than through a window.

Skylights, bay windows and other large groups of windows are great, not only for reducing electricity costs, but also for bathing a room in natural light. Natural light wakes up your senses and stimulates the brain to produces serotonin, which is a neurotransmitter involved in mood levels.

Natural light is not only good because of the technical side of things. The next time it is sunny outside, with a blue sky and a few wisps of clouds in the sky, take a look around and see how many people are mad and upset.

Chances are, very few, if any, will have a sour look on their face because a sunny day usually equates with a cheerful spirit in our culture. Nothing tops off a sunny day like great music that you can move to.

Listen to Music

What is playing on the soundtrack of your life? The great thing about music is that there is a different style of song that works best for everyone, from Beethoven's 5th to heavy metal, music moves a person's soul.

Music has the capability to influence people like none other, from bringing tears one moment to helping the heart give words its deepest pain to giving hope and understanding in a time of need.

Does your house have a custom sound system installed, one that can broadcast music in every room while you do your weekly chores or work on that project you have been putting off for a month? Being able to listen to music can motivate you to get things done or to relax, depending on what your intentions are.

Exercise More

Marathon runners usually have a high amount of endorphins and other hormones running through their bodies at the end of a run that give them a natural high and feeling of happiness. Professional athletes report the same type of occurrence when training or competing. Exercise is not only good for the health of our bodies; it also improves our moods through self-image and natural mood enhancing hormones.

Allowing a large enough space in your home for a workout facility gives you the option to release those hormones and increase the self-image thus boosting your mood and energy; it's a two for one, win-win situation.

Social Interaction

When people become down on themselves and depressed, they usually withdraw from society and lock themselves away until they are ready to come out and face the world again. The best way to prevent this from happening is to force yourself into a social atmosphere where, doctors say, our minds are able to connect with someone and can get through the rough parts of life almost ten times as quick as those that lock themselves away.

A house with enough room to entertain is essential. A large living room or bonus room where everyone can gather and hang out, as well as a big dining room, back yard and deck are must-haves in a new house. By placing yourself in this situation you will get out of that slump faster than you ever thought possible.

Breathe Deep

Take a deep breath. Finding a house that meets all of these needs is not that hard. All you need to do is get in touch with a local Realtor(R) to discuss your options and to find the house that is right for you. Besides, breathing deep vibrates your pituitary gland, releasing endorphins - feel - good hormones - and reducing blood pressure, so make sure to tell your Realtor(R) to do a lot of deep breathing while you read your long list of search criteria. Happy house hunting!
