subject: Choosing A Great Digital Camera For Intermediate Users [print this page]

While these cameras are normally more expensive, they offer flexibility to the photographer, especially with the settings.

The Memory

Quality and the resolution of the photos are dependent upon the memory of a camera. Since intermediate camera users tend to take multiple, large-format photos, there needs to be more storagein the camera so that the pictures come out with the highest possible quality.

Almost all cameras come with a limited internal space, but will only allow for one or two photos to be taken. External memory cards are popular and most intermediate users will often have two or three memory cards to ensure they never miss out on that great photo opportunity.

Image Resolution

Taking a great picture means that image colours are bright, there is nice contrast and sharp definition, all characteristics that an be achieved with a high image resolution.

Most basic users want to be able to take photos ranging in sizes of 4 x 6 and 5 x 7 prints. In this case, a 2 or 3 megapixel camera is sufficient. As an intermediate user, you may be taking larger photographs such as 8 x 10, meaning you will need a digital camera that features anywhere from 5 to 10 megapixels.

The Camera Lens

The lens is also an extremely important feature to look out for when choosing a digital camera, as this is how you will view your image before snapping the photo.

If you are a more experienced photographer, you may want to invest in a camera that allows for interchangeable lenses so that you can vary the types of shots that you take. Such features include wide angle and telephoto lenses.

Digital Camera Filming

Many aspiring photographers find the movie mode feature beneficial as they can remember the mood of the surroundings before they begin taking photographs. Movie modes on more high-tech digital cameras are now offered in HD and stills from the footage can often be converted into images. This can be great for photographers who wish to create a montage of photographs and do not have the manual rapid fire function on their digital camera.
