subject: Witness The Visual Orchestra Of The Symphony Of Lights In Hong Kong [print this page] Situated in Southern China, Hong Kong is a coastal island whose culture is a fusion of Colonial Europe and Chinese roots. Moving forward with the times, Hong Kong still manages to hold on to Chinese traditions that make Hong Kong unique. The city is popularly referred as 'where East meets West'.
Organized by the tourism board of Hong Kong, the phenomenal Symphony of Lights attracts millions of visitors. It even has a place in the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's biggest light and sound spectacle.
An assortment of lasers, searchlights, LED lights, simple lighting and projection lighting make the Symphony of Lights come alive. The show acts out five themes, beginning with "Awakening" where flickering laser lights gradually light up whole buildings. It is symbolic of the growth of Hong Kong. Then it transcends to the next scene: "Energy" that is portrayed with increasing colour and long sweeps of lasers and searchlights bouncing around, lighting up the night sky. This conveys the energy of Hong Kong. The third theme is "Heritage" as red and gold colours take over and the buildings turn royal gold and red.
And what would the symphony be without music? For instance, the Heritage scene is accompanied by Chinese musical instruments enhancing the light show experience. The fourth scene, "Partnership", is a beautiful ballet of unity as lights reach from opposite sides of the harbour and sweep across to the other side. Finally, "Celebration" culminates in the finale where the display morphs into a fast, swirling display of many colours.
The best place to witness the display is at the "Avenue of Stars" on the riverside walkway outside the Golden Bauhinia Square in Wan Chai, on the Tsim Sha Tsui water's edge, and on ferries that run along the Victoria Harbour carrying sightseers. If you are at the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront you will be able to hear the narration and the music of the Symphony of Lights. There are certain days of the week when the narration will be in English, and other days when it will be in Cantonese and Putonghua.
