subject: Buy Cutlery - Get The Right Utensils For Your Kitchen And Cooking [print this page]

Taking time to buy cutlery properly is not something many people view as a priority. Yet, the cutlery you choose for your home could very well be a lifelong decision. Think back to your parents' home. It is not uncommon to find our parents still in possession of cutlery we remember from childhood. Whether it is carving knives or peeling knives or the dinner service, a good quality cutlery set can last for many years.

Some people prefer to purchase two sets of cutlery for their home. This is useful if you want to keep one set for special occasions and use the other for everyday use.

You may find that everyday cutlery services are sold in sets of four. You will have four each of knives, forks, tablespoons and teaspoons. The set may also include two each of serving spoons and serving forks. You may consider buying two cutlery sets even if four each is enough for your household. This will give you extra just in case pieces get lost.

You should buy stainless steel cutlery for everyday use because of its durability. Stainless steel is also very attractive especially those with a high chrome finish. You might want to find a dinner service cutlery set that matches your plate settings. There are cutlery sets that have fine handles that come in all shades of colors and are fashioned from a range of materials such as plastic, bone and even leather.

You should be careful when buying steel cutlery with attached handles. Even if the quality of the stainless steel is good the handles can be poor quality especially in the way they have been joined. Look at them carefully to ensure that the handles are not likely to drop off with the slightest knock.

Solid silver cutlery is extremely nice for extra special occasions. Silver cutlery will last you for always and you can even hand them down to your children and grandchildren. You should buy at least a twelve person cutlery set for special occasions so there is less chance of you running short. You may want a full dinner service that includes pieces for a several course meal. Silver cutlery needs regular polishing thus making them unsuitable for everyday use.

If you want to buy cutlery for a new home you must also think of your cooking utensils as well as your dinner service. Choose your carving knives with care. They should be made of a good heavyweight steel but not too heavy to make them unwieldy. You kitchen knife set are best stored in a knife block on your kitchen counter for easy access.
