subject: Purchasing A Stair Chair? Some Factors To Consider [print this page]

If you are looking for a stair chair or lift for a love one or yourself, there are several factors to keep in mind while considering your options and different models.

First, consider how it will be easiest for the user to get in and out of the stair lift or chair. There are models where the user can sit, there are models where they can stand, and there are models which can accommodate wheel chairs as well. Most users prefer a sitting chair lift, but there are those that will not find that the best choice as well. For example, if a person has difficulty getting into a sitting position, they may prefer to stand while in the lift. On the other hand, if the person has difficulty getting out of a wheel chair, you should get a lift that can accommodate their chair.

Next, you need to make sure the type of stair lift you are considering is appropriately sized for the person who will be using it. If the stair chair is not strong enough to bear the weight of the individual, it will be quite dangerous for the person to use it. On the other hand, if the stair chair is too big, the user may slip out of it while it is motion, which is also very dangerous.

Finally, consider how the stair lift will be controlled. If it will be controlled by a user with other disabilities, such as vision impairment, you may need special auditory controls to help the person use it successfully. On the other hand, if a caretaker will be running the unit, the controls will need to be in a location where they can access them separately from the stair chair.
