subject: Troubleshooting Portable Air Conditioning [print this page]

Unit stops and starts Often : Conveyable air con units need unrestricted air flow to operate most efficiently. If the exhaust is obstructed, the unit will shut down to avoid overheating.

Inspect the exhaust hose from the movable aircon unit to the exhaust location, generally a drop ceiling or an exhaust port mounted in a window. Make sure the hose is installed properly and has no kinks that would meddle with air flow. The hose should be as straight as practical as each curve increases air friction and decreases potency. Never extend a hose to reach a distant exhaust port. Exhaust hoses are so long as they have to be and extending them increases air friction.

Unit Runs Steadily or Doesn't appear to be Cooling : The commonest reason for poor transportable air conditioner performance is a filthy filter. Air filters should be checked and replaced continually. If the unit isn't working correctly, the very first thing to test for is a mucky air filter. Don't vacuum and reuse dispensable filters as it is most unlikely to clean them adequately for efficient operation.

Check for obstructions at the air intake and exhaust. If the air is not flowing smoothly, the unit has to work harder to cool down what tiny air makes it into the system. Something similar to a desk pushed up against the air intake will suppress the unit's performance.

Close open doors or windows. You should not have windows open in a room with movable air con and doors ought to be kept closed, opened just when entering or leaving the room.

Unit Is Extremely Loud : Transportable air-conditioning makes a specific amount of noise, which is inescapable. But the noise level shouldn't be jarring or distracting. Rattling or moaning isn't normal, neither is a unexpected increase in noise level. Loud units are usually not level, causing undesired vibration. Check the unit to guarantee it is on a level surface and isn't touching other objects that could be vibrating.

Unit Is Leaking: Portable air conditioning produces water since cooler air holds less moisture. Some units are able to remove the moisture through the exhaust vent while others have internal tanks to collect the water. Check to see if the tanks are full and need to be emptied. Ensure drain plugs and tank caps are secured. When relocating the unit, always empty any water tanks before moving.

These few simple steps will cover nearly any problem you are likely to have with portable air conditioning and will save your company the cost of a service call.
