subject: Liven Up Your Home With A New Deck [print this page]

Is your old deck starting to lose its appeal? You can change your outdoor living space just by remodeling it, or go all out and create a totally new area to better serve your family's changing needs.

The very first thing you should start with is by thoroughly cleaning the area if you want to use the same space. A pressure washer and cleaners designed for deck cleaning may reveal an area that looks better than you remember. You can achieve a brand new appearance for your deck by washing it with some water sealant, even if it is made of pressure treated wood.

The next step that will bring about that new look for your deck is getting rid of the old furniture and putting new one instead. A frequent if bad habit when it comes to deck furnishing is reusing old furniture that has long lost its shine and color. Why not try some new items that along with some outdoor rugs will blend to make an attractive and colorful place? Or, if you've got a green thumb, consider adding banks of annual plants to brighten the space.

It is not only the deck that you need to think about when redecorating, but also its surroundings. Just to have something to occupy your attention while spending time outside on your deck, you could plant some trees and shrubs, that add to the privacy of the place, or you can delight your senses with a small pond or water fountain.

A general redecorating job on your deck will save you hundreds of dollars that you would normally spend on additions made in the hope of renewing its looks.

You may choose to rebuild your entire outdoor space, or limit yourself to smaller construction projects that will add some newness to the place. The outdoors of your home gives you enough space to turn your imagination loose, not to mention the huge sea of ideas and tips found on the internet and in specialty magazines.

If that is the case, some low-cost lattice panels or bamboo screens could make a difference in the looks of your deck. Furthermore, if you want to enhance the privacy effect of your deck, you can use some sheer fabric curtains and ready made canopies. Painting it in a whole new color or 'rugs' on the deck floor will give it a cheerful look. With the right tools it won't take you more than a weekend to finish one or more of these projects.

On a budget that includes a total replacement of the deck, you may want to consult a professional. To achieve a more modern and elegant look for your deck, you may want to build a tiered or a broadly curved one, also using new fabricated materials to make it more resistant to weather changes and thus more durable. These projects will be more expensive and time consuming, but will give you a new area you can enjoy for years to come.

Whatever option you choose, remodeling your deck is likely to make you eager for warm weather and outdoor entertaining.
