subject: Green Recycled Glass Kitchen Countertops [print this page]

So recycled glass would probably not be the first material that comes to mind as being a great kitchen counter top option. But in actual fact it is and a very green one too.

These days a great many popular kitchen counter top options are made from stone or synthetic materials that are petroleum based. Petroleum is hardly an eco-friendly thing in any shape or form and the quarrying practices used to obtain granite and the extra energy it takes to move the heavy material from one place to another make it, to a slightly lesser degree, a less than sustainable building material as well.

None of that is true of recycled glass. For a start it is, well, recycled. Some lucky bottles, mirrors and discarded window panes are getting a reprieve from suffering a life sentence in a landfill and being turned into kitchen counter tops that are as strong as stone and just (if not more) beautiful to behold.

Currently the most popular recycled glass kitchen counter top choice looks a lot like terrazzo marble. These counter tops are actually a mixture of concrete and recycled glass, which is what makes them so very durable, and even the concrete is recycled. The glass chips come in every color of the rainbow and all kinds of shapes and sizes plus even the concrete component can be dyed different colors.

In terms of price, recycled glass is more expensive than laminate but more affordable than granite or marble. If you are looking for a kitchen counter top that will both stun your neighbors and help save the earth at the same time then recycled glass just might be the right choice for you.
