subject: My Medical Transcriptionist Goal [print this page]

I am a 59 year old mother of 3 children (1 girl and 2 boys) and a grandmother of 7 children (5 boys and 2 girls). I am the 4th child in a family of 10 (5 boys and 5 girls) and I can honestly say we all fairly "hefty". My mother had Type II Diabetes and passed away in 2000 after suffering a Diabetic Coma. My father had High Blood Pressure and Congestive Heart Failure (CHF). He passed away in 1997 after suffering a Stroke. When I was growing up, I never knew about my parents medical conditions. After the death of both of my parents, I took it upon myself to research their medical conditions. I wanted to educate myself to become more aware of what may be hereditary.

I also needed to know what kind of changes I needed to make in my own life. My husband's mother had Congestive Heart Failure (CHF), Neuropathy, Type II Diabetes and Water Retention. I took care of her the last year of her life. She passed away in 2004 from drowning in her own fluid and I felt like I had let her down. My husband became disabled in 2006 due to Congestive Heart Failure (CHF), Weeping Ulcers, Type II Diabetes and Morbid Obesity. He weighed 407 pounds and was confined to a wheelchair. He recently had Gastric-Bypass Surgery and is doing quite well. He has lost over 200 pounds. He is no longer Diabetic nor does he have High Blood Pressure. If I had been more educated of his medical problems, he would not have scars on his legs today. The changes I had decided to make in my life were too late. SN:0TG9Y2ESY

In 2008, I became disabled due to Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD), Coronary Arterial Disease (CAD) and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). I also have Asthma and Allergies. I knew that these were hereditary conditions but I spent so much time looking out for others that I forgot about myself. Most of my medical problems could have been avoided if I had taken the time to take care of myself. My life-long goal has been to be a certified online medical transcriptionist. What has influenced me the most to take this step for training is the countless hours I have spent in and out of Doctor's Offices and Hospitals. There is so much medical terminology used that sometimes it takes me days to figure out what the doctor is saying. I feel that by taking this training it will educate me, not only on my Medical problems, but the problems of others. I believe the flexibility of working at home is the right path for me. I have many doctor appointments and this will enable me to work around them. The thought of doing medical transcription at home is very appealing to me. I have never put myself first but I believe I have put my ambitions on hold to take care of family for much too long. I have always been fascinated by the Medical Profession and I truly feel that this is what I am meant to do with my life.
